Kennedy's Blog

If you’ve ever met Kennedy — my very large, very opinionated Rottweiler — you’ll know he approaches the world with a deliberate sniff, a steady stance, and a healthy amount of curiosity.

Before he moves forward, he pauses.

Before he trusts, he checks.

And honestly? That’s a lesson in leadership more of us could use.

In governance, quality systems, or change leadership, we often feel pressure to move fast. To decide, approve, act, respond.

But how often do we actually pause and check the scent first?

Due diligence isn’t just for mergers or risk registers — it’s a mindset. One that says:

  • Is this what it appears to be?
  • Have I asked the right questions?
  • Do I understand the full context?

I’ve worked with boards who’ve rushed through agenda items without stopping to ask “what’s the impact on our clients?”
I’ve seen leaders approve new systems without consulting staff.
I’ve watched change get rolled out before people were even trained.

And in every case, the problem wasn’t a lack of care. It was a lack of pause. A skipped sniff, if you will.

Leadership isn’t about speed. It’s about clarity.

Like Kennedy teaches me on every walk — sometimes you need to stop, check the scent, and make sure you know what you’re walking into.

Whether you’re reviewing policy, hiring a new exec, or redesigning a client pathway — pause, sniff, assess.

Kennedy may not sit on any boards (yet), but he’s helped me remember:
The best leaders are the ones who know when to wait, and what to watch for.

And occasionally, they deserve a treat for good judgment. 🦴
